Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then found multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism made him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine people by a assailant focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
