EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
