Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge specific decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
